Every year Gloucester History Festival launches with the much loved Gloucester Day, celebrating a proud city steeped in history with a passion for its future.
Working in partnership with Alan Mayatt, the Crier to the Cathedral City and Port of Gloucester, the City will come alive with joyous activities to lift its spirits. With social distanced measures in place, the day’s festivities will include street stalls, re-enactments, talks, tours and marching drums.
At 2pm there will be a one minute Clap for Gloucester. The applause will give thanks to the businesses, key workers and volunteers who have helped the City through the current Covid 19 Pandemic. Councillors will also be visiting local businesses throughout the day to show their gratitude.
To celebrate 200 years since the linkage of Gloucester Sharpness and Stroudwater canals, the finale will take place at the Tommy Nielson Boat Yard and Gloucester Brewery with speeches and toasts to Gloucester’s past and future.

You don’t need to be an archaeologist to excavate Gloucester.
A walk around the city reveals a tapestry of Medieval stone, Jacobean timber, Neoclassic facades and Brutalist concrete.
Equipped with nothing but a smartphone, everyone is able to capture compositions and textures that celebrate Gloucester’s heritage.

As the building itself would have been a witness to the events taking place that year in 1643 it is such an appropriate venue! We hope to have several reenactors, including our own Colonel Massey dressed in suitable attire to bring it all to life!
