Crossing Continents
William Dalrymple whisks us to India, Max Hastings and Ben Macintyre trek across Europe in the footsteps of the SAS whilst Jonathan Dimbleby visits Russia at the end of World War Two. Natalie Haynes transports us back to Ancient Greece, whilst David Olusoga reflects on the ‘History Wars.’
Quests into Past Worlds
Time travel back to the Tudors with Philippa Gregory whilst three of Britain’s great medieval historians Dan Jones, Philippa Langley and Helen Castor plunge us back into the world of Henry V and Richard III. Horrible Histories guru Greg Jenner and Daisy Dunn transport us to Caesar’s Italy and rowdy Roman Britain whilst wordsmith Susie Dent unlocks the mysterious world of the dictionary-maker.
History on Screen
Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge cooks up the best of British food whilst comedian Stewart Lee takes a sideswipe at history. From Sherlock to Doctor Who, Mark Gatiss explores history and drama whilst Carl Chinn reveals his ancestors, the real Peaky Blinders. An audience with Lady in Waiting Anne Glenconner and royal insiders Kate Williams and Robert Hardman opens up palace secrets past and present.
Unearthing Hidden Histories
Kate Mosse and Clare Mulley celebrate WW2 heroines whilst Shalina Patel and Priya Atwal unearth fascinating figures hidden in history. In the Wolfson History Prize Event Hakim Adi reveals African and Caribbean people in Britain since the Romans, Vanley Burke and Rider Shafique explore the earliest recorded slave song from 18th century Barbados and Waldemar Janusczcak questions the politics behind Constable’s The Hay Wain.
