7 Vauxhall Road
The first business in Gloucester established and owned by a black person is probably the grocery shop which was at 7 Vauxhall Road.
A brief Backstory
The brainchild of entrepreneur Mr Ruddy Weir. Ruddy came to Gloucester in the early 1950s from St Catherine’s in Jamaica, the first of his eight siblings to emigrate to the UK.
Although there were mobile vans which sold the foods which people who had recently come from the Caribbean were missing, we believe that his was the first shop in a fixed location.
