Raise the roof for two weeks of history in the heart of Gloucester. From 4 to 19 September 2027, the Autumn Gloucester History Festival brings the UK’s leading historians, broadcasters and thinkers together for stories that span centuries, cross continents and bring the past into the present.

This year, Gloucester stands at the centre of two anniversaries. 700 years after the death of Edward II at Berkeley Castle, we revisit the king whose tomb lies in Gloucester Cathedral. We mark 1,100 years since Æthelstan united England in 927. England’s first king died in Gloucester, giving the city a place in the story of a kingdom taking shape.

From kings and kingdoms to the lives that history too often overlooks, expect fresh perspectives, bold debate and the pleasure of discovering the past together.
