The world’s oldest surviving manuscript of an 18th century slave song from Barbados is held in the Gloucestershire Archives. It’s the earliest known slave song on record and part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

See part of the manuscript and hear the song as ‘the godfather of Black British photography’ Vanley Burke and leading artist Rider Shafique share its story, discuss their recent journey to Barbados and their installation at Gloucester Cathedral in response exploring the ongoing impact of the enslavement of African people.

Visit the Voices Gloucester exhibition Beating Back the Past at Gloucester Cathedral open until the end of September.
