From the Adoration of the Magi by Georges Trubert and Portrait of an Unknown Man by Jan Mostaert to Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley, Black subjects have been portrayed in Western art for nearly a millennium.  Opera singer and Radio 3 broadcaster Peter Brathwaite takes us on an extraordinary visual journey through the representation of Black subjects in Western art from medieval Europe to the present day, following his recent BBC programme and current critically acclaimed exhibition at Bristol Art Gallery & Museum.

‘A breathtaking visual explosion in which Brathwaite reimagines a wide variety of portraits of Black people in a stunning creative way…but also an important historical work.’ (Floella Benjamin)

You can see some of Peter’s Rediscovering Black Portraiture work, along with new installations and soundscapes, at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and the Georgian House Museum until 3 September. Peter Brathwaite: Rediscovering Black Portraiture | Bristol Museums
