You might be familiar with Oswald’s Priory, Llanthony Priory, Blackfriars and Greyfriars, but Gloucester actually had a fifth friary – the Whitefriars.  This Carmelite Friary built in 1270 was a thriving and vital part of the medieval city.  Today nothing survives above ground, but the King’s Quarter redevelopment provided a thrilling once in a generation opportunity to solve the mystery of this magnificent lost building.

In a fascinating discussion, Marino Cardelli who led the dig and leading local historian Phil Moss bring the monks of medieval Gloucester vividly to life, explore how the archaeologists investigated the site, share their extraordinary discoveries and explain Whitefriars’ place in the landscape of Gloucester‘s friaries. Chaired by BBC broadcaster Vernon Harwood.
