Event Details

The first Council Housing scheme in the City of Gloucester was devised in 1913 and completed in the Spring of 1914 at Northfield Square, Tuffley. It places the City in the vanguard of Cities and Towns to adopt high quality “Garden Suburb” standards of construction for council housing. This approach was later adopted extensively in Lloyd George’s ‘Homes fit for Heroes’ programme developed after the Great War. In the wider county, working class housing schemes were being pursued in the Forest, Vale and Cotswolds but in the turmoil of war the Government withdrew funding in the Spring of 1915.
