Event Details

Join knowledgeable Cathedral Guides to discover what life would have been like for the Benedictine monks of St Peter’s Abbey (now Gloucester Cathedral) around the time when this masterpiece of medieval metal work – the Gloucester Candlestick – was made in the early 1100s. The commissioning of this precious object by Abbot Peter occurred during a critical phase in the development of St Peter’s Abbey and this talk will draw upon evidence from a number of sources to explore daily life here in the 12th century. The guided tour that follows will showcase the original areas and features of the building, such as the Crypt and Chapter House, that would have been familiar to the monks of the time.
