Leading local historian Phil Moss reveals the intriguing story of Blackfriars Priory, built in 1249, home to Britain oldest surviving library building and a stunning architectural time capsule. He tells its extraordinary tale through the lives of its dwellers between the 13th and 19th centuries. From the medieval friar who went rogue causing the townsfolk to lay siege to the building to Thomas Bell, the Bill Gates of Elizabethan Gloucester, who saved the Priory from destruction by Henry VIII. And from Raikes the Elder who printed the 18th century Gloucester Journal at the Priory to Thomas Talbot who manufactured his bestselling Victorian mineral water, the Evian of its day, right here at Blackfriars.
